Wine

Lochiel Estate’s limestone and clay soils give great natural acidity and balance to our wines and our small pocket of land acts as a sun trap in the summer – two criteria for making good wine. Making great wine however, takes a little more time and patience but we are well on the way.

LOCHIEL has been growing beautiful Chardonnay for some years now.

Since we began in 2005 we have won Gold medals for our Chardonnay in 2008, 2009, 2012 and now 2015. In addition we have won Silver  in 2008 and 2009 in a number of different shows around New Zealand and Australia. Bronze medals feature for the red wines, Rose` and our fortified wine.

THE WINES


2016 LOCHIEL ESTATE CHARDONNAY - $25 per bottle

The Mendoza clone of Chardonnay seems to thrive in our particular area and gives us wonderfully rich and fruit filled wines which are hand crafted by our award winning wine maker. The 2012 is no exception with all the sweetness coming from the fruit esters as this wine is also dry with low residual sugar. Some of the wine has been taken through secondary (malolactic) fermentation which adds to the buttery notes. 100% was fermented in French barriques giving a little nuttiness and smokey flavours. The wine has rich fruit flavours and a long finish with a hint of citrus. This wine has won Gold in the 2015 International wine show

2016 LOCHIEL ESTATE ROSE` - $18 per bottle

Made from Merlot in the French Saignee fashion the wine is cold fermented, minimally treated and has a lovely strawberry nose. It has sweet fruit on the palate with refreshing crispness.

2015 LOCHIEL ESTATE MERLOT /MALBEC -$22.00per bottle

 About 60/40 Malbec/Merlot this wine has lovely plum notes up front from the Malbec followed by the rich berry flavours of the Merlot and complimented by the lovely soft texture of oak from French barriques where the wine has matured for 15 months. Bottle ageing for a minimum of 12 months prior to release makes this wine ready for drinking now with your favourite meat dishes and cheeses but it will certainly benefit from further cellar ageing from now to at least 5 years. It has a lovely peppery finish which makes it ideal for spicy foods.

2014 LOCHIEL ESTATE SYRAH - $30.00 per bottle

2014 was an excellent year for Syrah with good yields and ripe fruit.

The wine has a big nose with blackbeery and plum notes and a hint of Tamarillo - a characteristic of Northland Syrah. The wine is medium bodied with lovely fruit flavours and good acid and tannin balance and a long finish. It is ideal with red meats and cheeses and whilst it is drinking very well now it will benefit from cellaring for up to five years.

LOCHIEL ESTATE “THE LAIRD” $35.00 per 500ml bottle.

The advantage of being a small vineyard and winery is that you can afford to try to do something different. “The Laird” is a great example. Take our ripest Malbec and ferment in the style of a vintage Port but fortify a little earlier to achieve natural sweetness and then age in American Oak barriques in our own solera topped up each year with the current vintage. The end result a unique and lovely wine to savour after dinner with a cheese board, dark unsweetened chocolate or even Christmas cake or pudding. As the wine is aged in a solera it can be enjoyed now but will also benefit from cellaring (on its side as it is sealed with a cork) to achieve the final mellowing as one would with a vintage port.
